Our location goes back to 1880s when it was built as the Center Primary School in West Bridgewater MA. before becoming the West Bridgewater Public Library in 1908.
In 1962 the building was going to be demolished to make way for a new high school and a young, local entrepreneur, Kenneth Wood, spotted an opportunity -- He offered to buy the building for $1! The Town accepted! It was a win-win.
The Town expedited the permits and a cold December day in 1962 detours were made, with utility companies leading the way moving hydrants and power lines as the 100-ton, 90yr old building measuring 32ft wide and 31ft high, moved slowly to its new home, 1/2 mile away at the corner of South Main and Ash Streets.
I love that instead of the wrecker's ball, Ken Wood saved the historical building, and it keeps on giving today!
